Project Zomboid Zombie Types: Walkers, Crawlers & Sprinters

Not every zombie in Knox County behaves the same. Sandbox settings and population types change how dangerous a loot run becomes — here is what to expect and how to respond.

Standard walkers — slow but relentless

Most zombies shamble at walking speed. They are manageable one-on-one but deadly in groups because they block exits and amplify noise. Read basics on the PZ Wiki zombie page.

Kiting walkers into narrow doorways lets you fight one at a time — a core skill before you loot gun stores or malls.

Crawlers and prone threats

Crawlers sit low and are easy to miss when you focus on standing targets. They trip players in tall grass and at door thresholds. Always clear downed bodies before you loot a room.

The Indie Stone patches occasionally adjust animation and hit detection — watch official PC update notes after major builds.

Sprinters and sandbox population settings

Sandbox lets you enable sprinters, randomize speed, or lock shamblers only. Sprinters punish open-field loot runs and make vehicles more valuable. The Sandbox Wiki page lists every population toggle.

Knowing zombie types helps you filter ESP categories — covered on our wallhack page.
