Project Zomboid Game Guides
Project Zomboid Game Modes: Sandbox, Survivor & Multiplayer
Project Zomboid supports solo sandbox, curated scenarios, and multiplayer servers. This guide maps the modes you will pick at character creation and where to verify settings with official references.
Core single-player modes
Apocalypse is the default survival experience — death is permanent and zombies respawn over time. Survivor eases early difficulty; Builder disables zombie aggression for base construction. The PZ Wiki game modes page compares each option.
official Project Zomboid game guide walks new players through character creation, traits, and occupation picks before you commit to a long run.
Sandbox customization
Sandbox mode exposes loot abundance, zombie speed, water shutoff timing, and infection mortality. Tweaking one slider can make Knox County feel like a new game. See the Sandbox Wiki page for common presets.
Radar and ESP are especially useful on hard sandbox settings — see radar and ESP.
Multiplayer and co-op servers
Hosted servers and co-op let squads share base building and loot runs. Server admins set PvP rules, loot respawn, and zombie counts. Read multiplayer on the PZ Wiki before joining a public server.
For squad callouts and flank awareness, our survival guide overlaps with several co-op strategies.
Pick a mode that matches your goal
Learning mechanics? Builder or Survivor. Long-term challenge? Apocalypse sandbox with sprinters off until you are ready. Playing with friends? Find a stable multiplayer server with rules you agree on.
